ICYMI: Rep. Katie Porter, Accountable.US, Bully Pulpit Interactive, and Futerra Exposed API’s Disinformation Campaign and Impact on Climate Action
WASHINGTON, DC — In a webinar hosted by Climate Power Education Fund today, leading voices on climate change and the fossil fuel industry revealed evidence of Big Oil’s long term disinformation campaign and degradation of widely popular climate investments.
Congresswoman Katie Porter kicked off the webinar lifting up the importance of seeing through these disinformation campaigns at this very critical moment in our nation’s history and work on climate change. “For decades, oil and gas withheld critical data. They pushed climate change misinformation and scammed taxpayers. And they did all that to line their own pockets,” said Rep. Porter.
Some Highlights from the Webinar:
- BPI released new data showing how API and its members increase spending during key climate announcements. Also for the first time, they shared results from focus groups showing where consumers are seeing disinformation and how this disinformation generates harmful misunderstanding of the climate crisis.
- Futerra gave an overview of how API is influencing people through school curriculums, fashion magazines, and science exhibits.
- Climate Power highlighted the major differences between API’s marketing about employing young people, women, and BIPOC people and its real jobs record.
- Accountable US gave examples of how API is using its money to run fake grassroots campaigns using actors and school superintendents.
