Hurricanes

  • Thanks to the influence of both the Gulf low-pressure system and the tropical remnants of Lidia, widespread and beneficial rainfall is likely on Wednesday in Texas. 
  • Typhoon Bolaven rapidly intensified to a violent typhoon and will stay away from land, but could affect U.S. weather in the long term.
    • Typhoon Bolaven, a violent typhoon in the West Pacific basin, walloped the island territory of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands early this week, engulfing the islands in heavy rain and gusty winds.
    • AccuWeather meteorologists are concerned that the storm may eventually stir up trouble across the Gulf of Alaska late next week and then trickle down to influence the weather pattern along the West Coast of the U.S.

  • In New Mexico, 1 fire has burned 2,358 acres as of Wednesday.
  • In Oregon, 1 fire has burned 409 acres as of Wednesday.

Extreme Heat

  • Elkhorn coral populations – which had already been teetering on the brink of local extinction in Florida – have been decimated by the extreme ocean heat this summer.
  • An October 2023 study found that drought and higher temperatures will decrease the quality and quantity of hops, the aromatic plants that give beer its flavor.
  • Drought and extreme temperatures impacted East Texas pumpkin patches.
